The Greater Victoria Green Team organized a community and environmental activity in Cunningham Woods on Uvic Campus in Saanich. We tackled lots of invasive species including English Ivy, Himalayan Blackberry, Thistle, Daphne, and some massive English Holly shrubs. These invasive species continue to put a strain on the ecosystem by shading out native species and restricting biodiversity. Thankfully, the GVGT community and years of Uvic staff involvement prior to our GVGT activities, have been helping to save the native species! A very special thank you to Nancy Shackleford for helping coordinate this event. We will be back on Uvic campus on October 14th in Mystic Vale to remove more invasive species during Sustainability Week!

Highlights
- In total 27 volunteers participated and contributed 79 volunteer hours.
- 15 volunteers were introduced to Cunningham Woods, while 9 volunteers had never removed invasive plants before!
- We removed 23 cubic metres of invasive plants!

“Gives people an opportunity to do some labour work outside in the dirt which is good for the soul. It was great to see parents with their young kids there who maybe wouldn’t have an opportunity to be exposed to that otherwise. Also, this could be a great organization to partner with the municipalities to take measures to prepare for the next heat wave by planting trees for shade in parks that maybe otherwise don’t have it.” – Dana
