Invasive Species Month in BC! 

As part of Invasive Species Month, the Greater Victoria Green Team spent a good part of Sunday helping to restore the ecologically diverse Mary Lake Nature Sanctuary! We removed 14 cubic metres of invasive Scotch Broom and some Himalayan Blackberry! 

A big thank you to the the Greater Victoria Greenbelt Society for supporting our Green Team activities at Mary Lake! The funding made it possible to organize this activity!! Thank you to Koi Neah and Bob for all of your work helping to protect this habitat!

7 volunteers volunteered BOTH Saturday and Sunday!! They put in 8-10 hours each!! THANK YOU for dedicating your weekend to helping restore habitat in Greater Victoria!!

Highlights

  • 19 GVGT volunteers were engaged and contributed 75 GVGT hours 
  • 17 of the volunteers (89%) had never been to Mary Lake before
  • 10 of the volunteers (53%) had never removed Scotch Broom before!
  • We removed 14 cubic metres of invasive plants!
  • We revitalized an area measuring approx. 350 square metres
  • We enjoyed a lunch buffet that included ice cream and home made bumble berry pie!
